When it comes to the legal classification of different crimes, there are certainly levels and distinctions that carry with them corresponding punishments and/or fees. While it may be preferable to avoid, say, a felony in exchange for being found guilty of a relatively less severe misdemeanor, it should be noted that in some cases you may not be getting off so lightly after all. Misdemeanors are still punishable by a fine and up to a year sentence in jail, so being charged with something seemingly less severe could still affect your life in a very significant way, especially when it comes to job prospects.
